Sudbourne Hall Cricket Club has been in existence since 1893 with its current lease signed in 1997 for twenty years with its President, Sir Edward Greenwell. The Club provides the opportunity for people of all ages, abilities and ethnic backgrounds, regardless of gender, to enjoy the game of cricket. Participation in the playing of the game or experiencing the joys of watching is open to everyone. The Club focuses on developing youngsters to progress through the Colts Academy scheme to play in the senior side. The importance of discipline and teamwork is paramount to becoming a part of this well established organisation, our affiliation to the England and Wales Cricket Board decrees that we ensure that no individual or group is discriminated against in their pursuit of inclusion in cricket or its administration because of any personal characteristic other than those necessary for the proper performance of the roles involved or the membership applied for. The original aim of the Club was the encouragement of amateur cricket at all levels and ages and the protection of the interests of amateur cricketers regardless of background, this aim is still the main purpose of the Club.
A recently completed project has installed a single lane practice area to encourage more local youngsters to learn the game of cricket in a safe environment and to discover the benefits of being involved with an organisation that encourages them to develop their natural skills as part of a team culture. The Club has successful senior and academy teams but it is looking to introduce a scheme to bring players in at an earlier age to progress into the teams as and when they become proficient. The provision of a practice net, with all weather batting and bowling ends, will enable the club's three qualified level one cricket coaches to teach the younger children in the area to acquire the necessary skills for the enjoyment of the game. It is hoped that this approach will also attract a wider range of young people including disabled, female and ethnic background who are currently encouraged but who are in the minority in this isolated rural area. The project has been funded with contributions from The Lord's Taverners, Suffolk Coastal District Council Capital Aid Grant Fund, Sudbourne and Orford and Gedgrave Parish Council's Playspace scheme and some local fundraising.
Discussions with local schools have identified an interest in the provision of an after school cricket based activity as long as it can take place in a safe and controlled environment. The practice area with its net covering and stable surface provides such an environment for developing the important techniques of batting and bowling without endangering other individuals practising other skills nearby. The nearest facilities are at Woodbridge School which is 11 miles away and they are expensive to hire and rarely available at times that are suitable.
The Cricket Club has three England and Wales Cricket Board Level One Qualified Coaches and a nominated Welfare Officer who has attended courses on Child Protection with Sports Coach UK and NSPCC. As an affiliated member of the England and Wales Cricket Board the Club adheres to the SAFE HANDS Welfare of Young People in Cricket policy. The success of the Club's Academy team in winning their league for the two years they have been in existence demonstrates the effectiveness of this training team.
Although the club is well supported we know that we have to work hard to continue to attract new players for the future. The area around the club premises at Sudbourne Park contains few potential members from other than the current membership cross section of British male players although the club encourages members from across the demographic spectrum. Young people will be encouraged to become involved in the club by school visits and possibly a junior team competition within the local area. Young relatives of existing Club members will be encouraged to use the new facilities with coaching sessions being provided to supervise the development of the youngsters.
The game of cricket develops a sense of social responsibility and team spirit for players of all capabilities and skill levels. Everyone involved with Sudbourne Hall Cricket Club is a volunteer including the qualified coaches. They will provide support and encouragement for the development of the youngsters in general and will help to teach them the laws of the game and cultivate their skills. The Club will involve the local youngsters from the early stages of the project and will monitor their attendance at the facilities and the progress they make as they develop within the Club.
The catchment area for the youngsters is expected to be Orford, Gedgrave, Sudbourne, Snape, Rendlesham, Chillesford and Butley.
